are dolphins ever caught on fishing lures or are they too clever?
When on a holiday to Portugal, sports fishermen told me that they caught Marlin, Shark, and Tuna but never Dolphin because although there were lots about they were to smart to get caught,
Yes, dolphins (the mammals) are much smarter (or have better eyesight or whatever) than the fish, so they don't bite fishing lines.
Off the coast of Baja California, yellowfin tuna often travel with dolphins (the mammals), and boats often follow the dolphins to find the tuna. (This is why dolphin are commonly caught in nets when tuna are being netted.) The dolphins do not bite either the trolling lures or the live baits used for the tuna, even though the tuna and dolphins feed on the same bait (sardines, mackerel, etc.)
On the other hand, the dolphin fish (mahi-mahi or dorado) is one of the least choosy fish out there.
