How do I find the weedline, and why don't I mark fish?
I'm a young walleye fisherman on a small budget. I've got an Eagle Cuda 300 depth finder, and I need to find the weed line. I believe it'll be helpful. And why don't I mark any fish? Is it the depth finder?
Please help.
Hi Ryan,
I know it's frustrating when you're a new fisherman and you can't see what you really want to ... lots of fish! There are a few things you can do to find the fish though. I don't believe your depth finder is the problem. When you're trying to find out about a lake (you didn't say if you were on a lake or river, so I'm making an assumption), it's helpful to get a typographic lake map that shows the depths and contours of the lake. You can get one at your local bait shop. This will help you know where to start on the lake with your depth finder. Talk to the people in the bait shop too. They usually know a lot about what fish are biting and where. The weeds should show up on your depth finder if there are any. If you're fishing on a lake with a sandy bottom, there may not be as many weeds and probably not many fish as that's where they hide and hunt.
The depth finder will help you mark fish. It may be that you're not seeing any because you're not in the right depth where the fish are hiding. Walleye like weeds and rocks so that's good to look for but, you might also find them in deep water where there are no weeds! I have caught them before in 25 feet of water.
You don't say what method you're using to fish. If you troll or back troll, you will be able to cover a lot of surface area and will have more luck than if you're casting in one spot. Once you find where they are, you can drop a jig down and wait for them to strike.
A lot of figuring out where the fish are is just trial and error. As you get to know the lakes around you better, you'll be able to find the fish faster. Of course, there's no guarantee that you'll find the fish or catch them! Someone once said, "If fishing was easy, it would be called catching!"
Good luck!
