braided line on a Garcia 10000i reel? ?
going after tuna (black fin and yellow fin) here in a couple weeks, and I'm setting up a casting rig. settled on a 10000i garcia big game reel, with a 7ft ugly stick, now looking to rig it up. heard lots of recommendations for power pro line. any recommendations on test of line? how about backing with mono? how much and what test? also looking for advice on leaders and knots from mono to braid or braid to fluro carbon. any advice appreciated
6'6" Heavy action Ugly Stik.
Your reel got a max drag around 22lbs (can't remember the exact figure). So, your reel will handle lines up to 60lb class. You can put heavier lines on it, but it doesn't mean you'll be able to make the reel land bigger fish by doing so.
You didn't mention which model of Ugly Stik you got. If there aren't any new, recently introduced models of Ugly Stiks available, then most heavy duty Ugly Stik currently available is the Ugly Stik Tiger rated for 20-50lb line. Please keep in mind that among Ugly Stik Tigers, there are versions rated for 12-30lb lines as well. Many other variations of Ugly Stik were rated for line 30lbs or less. As a result, you should keep your line within the factory recommended range for your rod.
Mono lines will be a bad choice for backing. For the same pound test, mono lines will have larger diameter than dacron and braid lines. Mono lines aren't as abrasion resistant as dacron and barids as well. Also, mono lines will oxidize and weaken over time. Dacron between 60-80lb test will be a much better choice. Since you'll be using braids, I'd fill 3/4 (or more) of the spool with backing.
When it comes to braid lines, there really aren't that many suitable choices to choose from because braid lines will slip if wrong knots were picked. Just look up and stick with knots for braids and you'll be fine.
I don't know which area you'll be fishing and I don't know what size range of fish are in the area. Personally, I think your setup is too light if there are bigger yellowfins around. If I were you, I would call the docks around the area and ask for recommendations for rods and reels. Good luck and tight lines.
