eating seafood/fish while pregnant: is it safe?
my friend Saffy is a month further along than i am in her pregnancy. she has gone to her first and second ultrasound and had integrated screening done, got the results back, and her baby is healthy and perfectly normal but she eats shrimp and crab meat a lot, and she had 4 cans of tunafish in one week! i heard you were supposed to stay away from fish during pregnancy, but i also heard that it's okay to eat saltwater fish which is what she has been doing besides the tuna, i'm not sure if that was freshwater or saltwater. she also drinks a lot of soda. couldn't this cause problems? her argument is that women have been eating whatever they want since the beginning of time and have had healthy babies. and my fiancee's mother says she ate almost nothing but seafood during her pregnancy. i try to listen to the doctor, but i LOVE pepsi and seafood. is it okay for her or for anyone for that matter, to eat like that?
You are allowed to eat a certain amount of fish per week, fish they recommend you stay away from are swordfish, atlantic salmon and catfish. Plus any sushi, they all carry higher levels of mercury which can be harmful to you and the baby. I eat canned tuna about twice a week, midwife said it was fine. My midwife also told me that 16oz of caffeine is all right too. So if you want to have a can of pepsi go for it, just don't drink a whole bunch. And a little fore warning, pop will make you bloated, dehydrated and very uncomfortable. Drink water or juice way better for you!
